The country is fully embracing the "get fit" message from Operation Transformation and it is fantastic to see everyone getting involved in the walks and activities that are being organised for it.
I have started using their lesson ideas as part of my P.E. lessons (which you will find here) but unfortunately I just don't have the time to do some every day, as they suggest. Two years ago they released "Step it Up" which the children in my class absolutely loved and it got me thinking that this year I would love to find another video or idea that would get them excited and active. I spent some time trawling through YouTube and came across a few nice ideas: The Run In Place Song Following Directions Song Super Mario Dance Kids Workout Ice Age Continental Drift Operation Transformation Song (2013) I couldn't find as much as i'd hoped on YouTube so I did some more googling and came across GoNoodle.com. It is a website with a seemingly endless supply of "Brain Breaks" - short activities designed for classroom use to get the children out of their chairs and active. It is free to set up an account and is ideal for use on the Interactive Whiteboard. I have only looked through the demo version myself but there are blogs and websites that rave about it and talk about what a difference it has made to classrooms around the world. I am really looking forward to using it - I think the children are going to love it!

As you may have seen from the ads on TV, Electric Ireland are running a "Powering Kindness" campaign this week (January 17th - 23rd). They have a few resources on their site for schools but they are very much aimed at the Junior end of the school. Regardless of what class you teach, this could be a good opportunity to encourage a week of kind acts in your school. One of the ideas on the Electric Ireland website is to make Kindness Trees and Kindness Forests and encourage the children to do at least one kind thing every day. You can submit pictures or videos of acts of kindness to their website or if your class or school uses twitter you can tweet pictures of acts of kindness to Electric Ireland. Full details are here. I really like the idea of creating a "Kindness Wall". I may not go posting any pictures on twitter or anything like that with my class but I would like to do something to mark it and I think it would be a very positive thing for the children to see the acts of kindness they are doing to build throughout the week. I'm sure many 2nd Class teachers, myself included, will be starting to think about art and displays for the First Confession over the next few weeks. As ever, Pinterest has come to the rescue! Hopefully you can find some sheep-related inspiration in these ideas!
Americans seem to make a big deal of celebrating the 100th day of school. We don't usually make much of a (or any) fuss about it but it can be a nice way of reinforcing the number with younger children and a nice thing to mark with children of any age!
By my calculations, most of us will see our 100th day in or around the first week of February! Here is a selection of some of the activities I came across: Poems & Songs from CanTeach We've Been Counting (to the tune of "The Ants Go Marching One By One") We've all been counting one-by-one, Hurrah! Hurrah! We've all been counting, oh what fun, Hurray! Hurrah! We've all been counting one-by-one, And now 100 days are done, Today's the 100th day of school! Of school, hurrah! Boom, boom, boom. We've all been counting two-by-two, Hurrah! Hurrah! We've all been counting, what a zoo, Hurray! Hurrah! We've all been counting two-by-two, And now days are gone, toodle-oo, Today's the 100th day of school! Of school, hurrah! Boom, boom, boom. We've all been counting five-by-five, Hurrah! Hurrah! We've all been counting, to the five jive, Hurray! Hurrah! We've all been counting five-by-five, And 100 days have gone for a dive, Today's the 100th day of school! Of school, hurrah! Boom, boom, boom. We've all been counting ten-by-ten, Hurrah! Hurrah! We've all been counting, and asking WHEN, Hurray! Hurrah! We've all been counting ten-by-ten, Can we count to 100 days again? Today's the 100th day of school! Of school, Hurrah! Iram Khan 100 Days of School (to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell") 100 days of school! 100 days of school! We've been at school 100 days 100 days today! 100 Song (to the tune of "The Saints Go Marching In") Oh we've been here for 100 days, Oh we've been here for 100 days. The time has gone so quickly, Oh we've been here for 100 days. 100 days of school (to the tune of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow") 100 days of school, 100 days of school, 100 days of school, To read and to write and to play. To read and to write and to play, To read and to write and to play, 100 days of school, 100 days of school, 100 days of school, To read and to write and to play.
